We received this email from a customer recently (We appreciate their feedback):
"I am glad I upgraded to Inventory Pro version 5. It works in all versions of Windows since Windows 95, and now in Windows 7 (both 32 and 64 bit versions). It also runs fine in Linux that I use on one of my laptops, (at this time Linux Mint 9 which is based on Ubuntu), and I am running it in Wine on my MAC with no problems. I love your products. They are rock-solid products that have really evolved over the years into real business solutions."
We are always happy to receive emails like this from our customers. If you run Windows, Linux/Ubuntu/Wine software, our programs will work for you. Our Windows programs will also run on Apple MAC's with the correct Windows emulation software installed. We have the solutions you've been looking for (on any platform)! Accessing FF Inventory Pro Deluxe over a VPN from a Remote Location
A VPN (virtual private network) is actually nothing more than a virtual Ethernet cable. Using a VPN enhances network security by allowing remote users to connect via an encrypted “tunnel” while keeping ports on the firewall closed and secure. Any VPN product should yield similar results weather using a hardware solution such as a VPN Concentrator or a software based solution. To demonstrate how this works we will use the free “LogMeIn” client software from Hamachi as an example. This software can be found here:
https://secure.logmein.com/US/products/hamachi2/download.aspx
1. Agree to the “Conditions of Use” and download the “Unmanaged” software package.
2. Install this software on the server and on the machine you will be using at the remote location.
3. Configure the Network/Create a New Network/Create a New Client Owned Network settings with a network name and password (You can use the respective machine names).
4. Check that you have connectivity between the two clients.
5. If you want to run the server side application as a service you can right click on the file “hamachi-2-ui.exe" located in the “C:\Program Files\LogMeIn Hamachi\” directory (default). Select “Install as a Service Mill Service” (see next blog topic for details).
6. Reboot the server.
7. From an outside network (remote office, coffee shop, etc.) run the Hamachi application.
8. Once a connection is established you should have access to your FF Inventory Database as well as any other shared folders you have access to locally on the server.

Run Inventory Pro Deluxe as a Network Service
FF Inventory Pro Deluxe - Configuring to run as a Network Service
When you run a program as a "service", the program will automatically be loaded when you turn on your computer. Many companies that run our database server on their server computer want to run it as a service, so that no one has to log in to the server computer to start our database server.
NOTE: a server computer is NOT required to run FF Inventory Pro Deluxe. Click here to read a topic about that.
To install our database server as a service, follow the steps below:
1. Install FF Inventory Manager Pro Deluxe on the machine you want to designate as the server. Install both client and server programs. The default locations are fine.
2. Open the FF Database Server GUI and set the Config/Network/Network Interface to “ALL INTERFACES”. This will cause the database server to listen on all physical and virtual interfaces.
3. Open the Client and enter the server name (not the IP address) where it says FF Server IP Address. This will allow the client to connect even if the IP address changes or if you are accessing remotely via a VPN connection.
4. Close the client, stop and exit the FF Database Server.
5. Install the Service Mill software http://www.activeplus.com/en/Products/ServiceMill . Any other service creation utilities should work but I will use this as an example.
6. Right click on the “FFServer.exe” which is located in “C:\invserv\” by default. Select “Install as a Service Mill Service”.
7. Right click on the " FFNInv.exe" which is located in “C:\FF Inventory Pro Deluxe\” by default. Select “Install as a Service Mill Service”.
8. Reboot the server but don’t log in.
9. Install FF Inventory Manager Pro Deluxe on a machine you want to designate as a workstation. Install only the client (workstation) using the "workstation-only install option". The default location is fine.
10. Open the Client and enter the server name (not the IP address) where it says FF Server IP Address. This will allow the client to connect even if the IP address changes or if you are accessing remotely via a VPN connection. You should now be able to access the FF Database Server from the workstation without the server machine logged in.
11. Repeat this installation on other workstations and set up users as needed.

Network Inventory Pro DELUXE - How Many Licenses Do I Need?

The number of licenses you purchase for FF Inventory Pro DELUXE depends on how many people you want using the program at the same time (simultaneous users). If you want 2 people logged into the system at the SAME time, you only need to purchase 2 licenses. You can install the program on all of your computers and setup as many user login ID's as you want, the licenses only apply to the number of simultaneous users. If you do not need multiple users, we also have a single-user version on our web site which does not use login ID's, or you could simply purchase a 1-user license for the DELUXE (network) version.
For example, you may have 5 computers networked together. You may install FF Inventory Pro DELUXE on all 5 computers. You can also setup 5 (or even more) user login ID's. If you purchase a 2-user license, your users can login from any of the 5 computers, however, only 2 users can be active at the same time (logged into the system). If one user logs out, then another user can login on any computer using their login ID. If you purchase a 5-user license, all five computers can have someone logged into the system at the SAME time. As you can see, our licensing is very flexible so that you can setup your business and computers the way that works best for you.
When you setup a user ID in the system, you can assign different system security options for each ID. For example, you could have one employee who has system-wide access and one employee who can only do invoices and run reports. There are 10 different levels of security settings in our program. You can also assign passwords to each user ID and require your employees to enter their password before they can gain access into the program or you can turn passwords off completely.
Our flexible licenses and 10-level password protections allow you great options to setup, protect and operate your business. Why not give FF Inventory Pro DELUXE a try? We have a free trial download on our web site.
Client/Server Multi-User Inventory Pro Deluxe
Our Inventory Pro Deluxe (IPD) software will run on any Windows Network. It can be a small home office or a large business network connected to a server computer. IPD comes in two programs, the database server and the workstation (IPD program). You only install the workstation, database server and database files on one computer in your network. We will call this the "server computer". All other computers should only install the workstation (IPD) and they will login to the "server computer" to access the database files. In other words, our database server and database files are only installed on ONE computer in your network and are shared by all other users.IMPORTANT: AN ACTUAL WINDOWS SERVER COMPUTER IS *NOT* REQUIRED UNLESS YOU PLAN ON HAVING MORE THAN 5 SIMULTANEOUS USERS. Otherwise, any standard computer can act as the "server computer" and run our Database Server and host the database files. Many people think that they need a full blown Windows Server to run our program, and that is simply NOT true. Two "regular" computers networked together can EASILY run two workstations (IPD) with no problems. This is because our Database Server requires very little "computer power" to handle 1-5 network connections to our database files.
Client/Server simply means that a "client" (workstation [IPD]) sends a request to update the database on the "server computer". Once the "server computer" processes the request, it returns the updated record back to the client. What makes this process so special is that all clients share the same database, the database resides on only ONE computer in the network, and special transaction processing ensures superior data integrity. It is a very superior way to process multiple transactions simultaneously, very fast, very safely and very robustly!
Still unsure what a client/server application is? Click on this link for a detailed explanation. We designed our program using a simple, yet robust client/server architecture but we also designed it to run on the smallest networks. Use it as a stand-alone, 1-user program, or as a multi-user program supporting 5,10,15 or more simultaneous users! It is VERY easy to use. Why not download the program and try it on your network today? You will be amazed at how easy it is to use!
